Learn More
Your dog can go anywhere without the risk of becoming infected with heartworm disease if you give him/her Heartgard Plus monthly!
What is Heartgard Plus? The worming medications in Heartgard Plus help to control and treat certain intestinal parasites (roundworms and hookworms) while effectively preventing heartworm in dogs. Ivermectin and Pyrantel pamoate work together in order to help protect your dog from heartworm disease, roundworms, and hookworms.
Formulated for: dogs and puppies unless he/she is under 6 weeks of age. A pregnant/breeding female should be able to tolerate this medication safely if necessary.
How is this medication given? It is recommended to administer Heartgard Plus to your dog on a monthly basis. Tablets should not be swallowed whole and should be chewed. You may need to break tablets in small pieces if your dog has the tendency to swallow without chewing.
It is essential to give tablets during the mosquito season (spring/summer) in order to protect your dog from heartworm disease although many veterinarians recommend using tablets year-round. Speak with your veterinarian to find out what he/she recommends for your dog. The first dose must be given within 30 days of the dog's first exposure to mosquitoes and the last dose must be given within 30 days after the dog's last exposure to mosquitoes if you are using Heartgard Plus seasonally.
A blood test to check for heartworm disease is typically mandatory prior to starting your dog on Heartgard Plus. Variables such as prevalence of heartworm disease in the area, missed or late doses of heartworm preventative, and your dog’s lifestyle will determine the frequency of heartworm testing. Your veterinarian is the best person to talk to regarding the frequency of heartworm testing.
Only give this medication to the dog for which it has been prescribed. Do not split tablets and give each dose exactly as directed by your veterinarian. Do not double dose. If you miss a dose, check with your veterinarian before restarting your dog on Heartgard Plus.
How does this medication work? Monthly administration of Heartgard Plus as directed by your veterinarian should effectively kill immature heartworms introduced to the dog within 30 days. Killing heartworms in the immature stage will prevent the development of adult heartworms which are difficult to treat and can be deadly if your dog becomes infected. Ivermectin and Pyrantel pamoate can also effectively kill and prevent certain intestinal worms (roundworms and hookworms).
What results can I expect? Heartworm larvae (immature heartworms) that your dog has been exposed to in the preceding month should be killed and hookworms and roundworms are effectively controlled and treated with Heartgard Plus. This should help protect your dog from adult heartworms that can lead to active heartworm infection while providing protection against intestinal parasites.
What form(s) does Heartgard Plus come in? Heartgard Plus for medium dogs 26-50 lbs is tablet that is flavored. Heartgard tablets are chewable.
Generic Name: Ivermectin, Pyrantel Pamoate
Common Brand Name: Heartgard Plus (Merial)
Dose and Administration: Heartgard Plus chewable tablet with beef flavoring that is given every 30 days (monthly). The dose your dog needs is based on his/her body weight. Heartgard Plus should not be swallowed whole and may broken into pieces should this be necessary.
If your dog has missed more than one monthly dose of this medication, check with your veterinarian. It may be necessary to recheck a heartworm test in order to restart this medication again. Do not give two doses at once. Heartgard Plus should only be given to the dog that it has been prescribed for. Do not split tablets. If the interval between doses is longer than one month, the efficacy of the drug may be reduced.

Keep your dog safe and protected from heartworms, hookworms, and roundworms at an affordable price with Iverhart Plus!
What is Iverhart Plus? Iverhart Plus is a heartworm preventative . It also works to control and treat common intestinal parasites (roundworms and hookworms). It comes in a chewable tablet that is flavored with pork and liver that is generally given every 30 days to provide protection. It is a generic alternative to Heartgard Plus.
Formulated for: Dogs and puppies must be over 6 weeks of age in order to receive this medication safely. Iverhart Plus is also considered safe for pregnant/breeding females.
How is this medication given? Iverhart Plus is given orally (by mouth) on a monthly basis in order to keep your dog protected from heartworm disease, roundworms, and hookworms. You can give tablets as a treat, in food, or you can give each dose directly into your dog’s mouth.
Try to give each dose on the same day every month. Be sure to observe your dog for a few minutes giving each tablet to make sure that he/she has swallowed the entire dose. If your dog spits a tablet out, give another one immediately.
This medication can be given all twelve months of the year or seasonally during mosquito season. Many veterinarians recommend giving a dose every month but some may recommend using this medication seasonally during mosquito season. If using this medication seasonally, the first dose needs to be given within 30 days of your dog's first exposure to mosquitoes and the last dose should be given within 30 days after the last exposure to mosquitoes or dosing may be ineffective. Each dose works to kill the parasites acquired during the previous month.
Your veterinarian will advise you on the frequency of administration that is right for your dog. If using this medication seasonally, heartworm testing may be necessary before giving a new dose. Your veterinarian can discuss testing protocols with you.
Generally, each dose is based on your dog’s body weight but always follow your veterinarian’s instructions regarding the use of this medication. Only give this medication to the pet for whom it was prescribed for. Tablets should be given whole and should not be split. Contact your veterinarian if you have any questions regarding the use of this medication.
How does this medication work? Iverhart Plus contains 2 active ingredients: Ivermectin plus pyrantel pamoate. Each ingredient kills the susceptible parasite by causing paralysis that eventually results in death. Ivermectin works to eliminate the heartworm larvae (Dirofilaria immitus). This prevents the adult form of the heartworm from developing. Pyrantel pamoate is effective in causing paralysis and eventual death of common intestinal parasites (hookworms- Ancylostoma caninum, A. brasiliense, Uncinaria stenocephala and roundworms- Toxocara canis, Toxascaris leonina).
What results can I expect? Each monthly dose works well to kill immature heartworms that your dog was exposed to in the preceding month. It also works to control and treat roundworms and hookworms which are common intestinal worms that can cause illness in dogs and humans.
What Form(s) does Iverhart Plus come in? This is a flavored, chewable tablet. This size of medication is made to be given to dogs that weigh 51-100 lbs.
Generic Name: Ivermectin and pyrantel Pamoate (Commmon Drug Name). Iverhart Plus contains the same active ingredients as Heartgard Plus. )
Common Brand Name:Iverhart Plus (Virbac).
Uses: Iverhart Plus is used to prevent heartworm disease in dogs by killing immature heartworm larvae before they develop into adults that can cause illness. This medication also controls and treats common intestinal parasites (hookworms and roundworms).

How does this medication work? Iverhart Plus works due to the action of Ivermectin and pyrantel pamoate which are the primary ingredients in this medication. Ivermectin causes paralysis and eventual death of heartworm larvae (Dirofilaria immitus) before adult heartworms have the chance to develop.
