What is Previcox? Previcox is a coxib class non-steroidal anti-inflammatory (NSAID) medication that your veterinarian may prescribe in order to provide relief from pain and inflammation associated with many types of joint abnormalities including arthritis in dogs.

How is this medication given? by mouth (orally). Give with food can reduce chance of stomach/intestinal side effects but giving without food is also acceptable. This medication is labeled for once a day use but you should always follow the dosage instructions provided by your veterinarian. Contact your veterinarian if it becomes difficult to administer to your dog. Only give this drug to the pet for which it was prescribed. If your dog is to be given Previcox long-term, try to give the minimum dose necessary in order to relieve symptoms.

How does it work? Previcox is a COX-2 (cyclooxygenase-2) inhibiting non-steroidal anti-inflammatory (NSAID) medication. COX-2 (cyclooxygenase-2) enzymes generate chemicals that are responsible for pain and inflammation in the joints and other places in the body. Previcox also works to spare the COX-1 (cyclooxygenase-1) enzyme which helps to maintain normal body function.

What results can I expect? Previcox helps relieve the symptoms associated with arthritis and other joint abnormalities. Since there is no cure for arthritis, Previcox can help reduce the inflammation that causes musculoskeletal (bone, muscle, and joint) pain in your dog which may help improve your dog's mobility. Post-surgical pain can also be minimized. Responses vary from dog to dog but most dogs will show evidence of improvement within days. If Previcox is discontinued or administered incorrectly, your dog’s pain and inflammation may return.

What Form(s) does Previcox come in? Tablets that are chewable with scoring splitting.

Dose and Administration: Previcox is a chewable, scored tablet given orally (by mouth). Tablets are scored so they can be split if necessary. Based on your pet's weight, your veterinarian will calculate the correct dosage and advise you about how to administer it. It is recommended to give this medication once daily but follow your veterinarian's recommendations precisely. Previcox can be given with or without food but giving with food can help decrease the risk of gastrointestinal upset (vomiting/diarrhea). Most dogs will take PREVICOX from your hand, but you can also place the tablet directly into your dog's mouth. If you miss a dose, give it as soon as you remember. If it is almost time for the next dose, skip the one you missed and go back to the regular schedule. Do not give two doses at once.

Possible Side Effects: Serious side effects associated with Previcox in dogs can occur with or without warning, and, in rare situations, can result in death. The most common side effects associated with this medication involve the digestive tract (vomiting, diarrhea, and decreased food consumption). Liver and kidney problems have also been reported with the use of NSAIDs. Symptoms that may indicate problems with Previcox include a decrease or increase in appetite, vomiting, change in bowel movements (such as decreased or increased activity level, lack of coordination, seizure, or aggression), yellowing of gums, skin, or whites of the eyes (jaundice), change in drinking habits (frequency or amount consumed), change in urination habits (frequency, color, or smell), and weight loss.
