Pets with exocrine pancreatic insufficiency (EPI) cannot produce the enzymes necessary for proper digestion of proteins, fats, and carbohydrates. Veterinarians prescribe Pancrezyme powder to supplement dogs and cats suffering from EPI with these necessary enzymes. What is Pancrezyme powder? Pancrezyme powder is made from whole raw porcine (pig) pancreas. This powder supplements dogs and cats suffering from exocrine pancreatic insufficiency (EPI) with the essential enzymes to efficiently digest proteins, fats, and carbohydrates. What results can I expect?- Digestion should improve.
- Symptoms of EPI such as diarrhea and weight loss should improve but this may take some time.
- Your pet should feel better.
- Administration is for your pet’s lifetime. Reoccurrence of your pet’s symptoms is likely if medication is discontinued.
Who is it for: Pancrezyme powder is labeled for dogs and cats. How is it given?- Powder is administered on your pet’s food and is given orally (by mouth).
- Your veterinarian will determine the exact directions for your dog or cat so follow his/her instructions.
- Powder should be mixed with your pet’s food.
- Add a small amount of water to the mixture if you give your pet dry food.
- The mixture needs to sit for 15-20 minutes before you give it to your pet.
- Small, more frequent meals are generally recommended if your pet takes Pancrezyme.
- Give this medication long-term in order to effectively manage your pet’s problem.
How does it work? Pancrezyme powder effectively replaces the enzymes necessary for proper digestion of proteins, fats, and carbohydrates in dogs and cats that cannot produce these enzymes on their own.
What form(s) does it come in? Powder can be purchased in 8 oz and 12 oz sizes. The manufacturer also makes Pancrezyme in a tablet.
Generic Name: Pancreatic enzymes, pancrelipase (Common Drug Name)
Common Brand Name: Pancrezyme (Virbac)
Dose and Administration: Exact dosing and frequency of administration will be determined by your veterinarian based on your pet’s weight and the severity of his/her problems. Pancrezyme powder should be given with food. Moistening your pet’s food is also helpful. The powder is mixed with the food. Let the food/powder mixture stand for 15-20 minutes before offering it to your pet. Small, frequent meals may be recommended by your veterinarian for the best results. If you miss a dose, give it as soon as you remember but never double dose. Always follow your veterinarian’s instructions. Pancrezyme needs to be given indefinitely for your pet’s lifetime. Discontinuing this medication can cause your dog or cat’s problems to reoccur.
Uses: Pancrezyme powder is used to supplement dogs and cats suffering from exocrine pancreatic insufficiency with the necessary enzymes to properly digest and absorb proteins, fats, and carbohydrates. Pets suffering from exocrine pancreatic insufficiency (EPI) cannot produce these enzymes on their own.
Storage: Store Pancrezyme powder at room temperature away from light. Keep out of reach of children and pets.
Possible Side Effects: Pancrezyme is usually safe. Diarrhea, cramping, or vomiting can occur especially at high doses. Your pet’s mouth may be irritated if the powder is not mixed well with moistened food and allowed to stand. Signs of an allergic reaction include facial swelling, hives, scratching, sudden onset of diarrhea, vomiting, shock, seizures, pale gums, cold limbs, or coma. If your pet displays any unusual symptoms while taking Pancrezyme powder, contact your veterinarian immediately.

Learn More
Control your pet’s hypothyroid (underactive thyroid gland) with Soloxine. This medication is prescribed by many veterinarians in order to provide thyroid replacement therapy for dogs and some cats who suffer from subnormal thyroid gland function because of a medical condition or surgical removal (mostly cats).
What is Soloxine? Soloxine is an oral medication that contains levothyroxine. Levothyroxine is a replacement for the hormone that the thyroid gland normally produces to regulate the body’s energy and metabolism. Supplementation with levothyroxine is necessary when your pet has an underactive thyroid gland (hypothyroidism).
Formulated for: dogs and cats. Occasionally, birds may receive Soloxine as directed by a veterinarian.
How is this medication given? The correct dosage of Soloxine for your pet will be determined by your veterinarian. This medication is given orally (by mouth) in dogs and cats. If given to birds, your veterinarian may instruct you to give this medication in the drinking water. Your pet should have unlimited access to water while on this medication. This medication can be given with or without food as per your veterinarian’s instructions. Different brands of this medication may vary so try to keep your pet on the same brand if possible. Your veterinarian may need to recheck thyroid hormone levels and adjust the dose if the brand of medication changes. Your veterinarian will likely require routine blood testing periodically in order to monitor thyroid function and to adjust the medication dosage as necessary. Only give this medication to the pet for which your veterinarian has prescribed it for.
How does this medication work? Levothyroxine is the active ingredient in Soloxine. It mimics the hormone thyroxine, which is produced naturally by the thyroid gland. Pets with an underactive thyroid gland (hypothyroidism) cannot adequately produce these hormones. This medication helps pets with hypothyroidism to maintain normal metabolism in the body.
What results can I expect? Soloxine should be effective in replacing thyroid hormones in pets with hypothyroidism. It should relieve symptoms of this condition but it is not a cure. Different pets react differently to Soloxine. Periodic blood testing as directed by your veterinarian (usually every 2-4 weeks) to monitor thyroid function is usually necessary until the ideal dosage for your pet has been established. Regular blood testing as directed by your veterinarian will also be necessary at regular intervals in order to make sure your pet is taking the correct dose of Soloxine. Results are typically not immediate. It may take several weeks of treatment to see results. Your pet will likely need to take Soloxine or a similar thyroid supplement indefinitely in order to control his/her thyroid condition.
What Form(s) does Soloxine come in? Soloxine is available as a tablet. It is given orally (by mouth).
Generic Name: Levothyroxine (Common Drug Name)
Common Brand Name: Soloxine
Dose and Administration: Soloxine is given by mouth (orally) to dogs and cats. Birds can take this medication in their drinking water as directed by a veterinarian. This medication should be given with plenty of water and can be given with food. The dosage of Soloxine is different for each pet and is also based on body weight. Your veterinarian will determine the dosage of this medication that is best for your pet. Twice a day dosing is common but your veterinarian will tell you what is right for your pet. If you miss a dose of medication, give it as soon as you remember. If it time for the next scheduled dose, do not give two doses at once. Always contact your veterinarian if you are unsure of how to give this medication correctly. Blood testing is required every 2-4 weeks until the ideal dosage for your pet has been determined.

What is Zeniquin? Zeniquin is a broad-spectrum antibiotic that is indicated for the treatment of susceptible infections. This medication fights infections of the skin, soft tissue, and urinary tract but it is also effective against bacteria in other parts of the body. It is given orally (by mouth) and is available with a prescription written by your veterinarian.
Formulated for: dogs and cats that are adults. Cats and dogs should be full-grown before taking Zeniquin. Large dogs and cats should be over 12 months of age in order to receive this medication safely. Small and medium dogs should be over 8 months of age and giant breed dogs should be over 18 months of age in order to ensure safe administration.
How does this medication work? Zeniquin is an example of a fluoroquinolone antibiotic. These antibiotics work to kill susceptible bacteria by inhibiting DNA replication.
What results can I expect? Signs of your pet’s infection should begin to dissipate and your pet should start to feel better. It is possible to see some improvement within two to three days but results and the length of time it takes for the infection to resolve will vary in each individual pet. It is important for your pet to finish all of the medication that your veterinarian prescribes even if your pet appears well. If the entire course of treatment is not completed, there is a higher chance that the infection will return or worsen. Consult your veterinarian if you do not notice an improvement in your pet’s symptoms after completing the prescribed course of this medication.
What Form(s) does Zeniquin come in? Zeniquin is a tablet that is given orally (by mouth). Your veterinarian will prescribe the size that is appropriate for your pet.
Generic Name: Marbofloxacin (Common Drug Name)
Common Brand Name: Zeniquin (Pfizer Animal Health)
Dose and Administration: Give Zeniquin tablets by mouth (orally) as directed by your veterinarian. Zeniquin is generally prescribed for once a day use but your veterinarian will determine the exact dose and dosing frequency that is right for your pet. If you do not understand how to give this medication or if have difficulty administering it, contact your veterinarian for further instructions. Make sure you use all of the medication that is prescribed even if your pet appears well. There is a higher tendency for the infection to recur or worsen if you do not complete the entire course of treatment. Provide plenty of fresh water for your pet to drink while taking this medication. Do not give this medication within two hours of giving dairy products. If you miss a dose, give it as soon as you remember. If it is almost time for the next dose, skip the one you missed and go back to the regular schedule. Do not give two doses at once.

Learn More
Your pet will recover from infection faster when you give him/her Baytril Taste Tabs! Baytril is an antibiotic that your veterinarian may prescribe in order to treat susceptible bacterial infections of various body systems including the urinary tract, prostate, lungs, and liver.
What is Baytril? Baytril is an oral antibiotic that is used to treat susceptible bacterial infections of the urinary tract, prostate, liver, GI tract, and other body systems. It is a fluoroquinolone antibiotic that is available as a flavored tablet.
Formulated for: Baytril can be given to cats and dogs. Use should generally be avoided in younger dogs during their rapid growth phase which is approximately 2 to 8 months in small to medium breeds, 2 to 12 months in large dogs, and 2 to 18 months in giant breeds. Your veterinarian will determine whether the benefits outweigh the risks in younger patients.
How is this medication given? This medication is given orally (by mouth). Baytril Taste Tabs can be given every 24 hours (once a day) or the dose can be split and given every 12 hours (twice daily). The correct dose and dosing frequency will be determined by your veterinarian so always follow his/her instructions.
Make sure your pet has unlimited access to water while taking this medication. Do not give Baytril Taste Tabs within two hours of giving dairy products.
If you have difficulty giving your pet this medication, contact your veterinarian for further instructions. Make sure you complete the entire course of antibiotics even if your pet appears to feel better before the entire regimen is complete. If the entire course of treatment is not given, infections can recur or worsen.
How does this medication work? Baytril is an antibiotic in the fluoroquinolone family. Fluoroquinolone antibiotics work by blocking the bacteria's ability to make DNA. This results in death of susceptible bacteria.
What results can I expect? Baytril is absorbed from the intestinal tract into the bloodstream. It ultimately settles in the affected body system where it works to kill susceptible bacteria. This medication needs to be given for several days in order to achieve optimal results. If doses are missed or if treatment is stopped before the regimen is completed, infection may recur or worsen.
If your pet suffers from a bacterial infection that is susceptible to Baytril, he/she should start to feel better. Let your veterinarian know if your animal's condition worsens or does not improve after beginning treatment with Baytril.
What Form(s) does Baytril come in? Baytril is available as a tablet. Tablets come in 22.7 mg, 68 mg, and 136 mg strengths. This medication is for oral use only (given by mouth).
Generic Name: Enrofloxacin (Common Drug Name)
Common Brand Name: Baytril (Bayer)
Dose and Administration: Baytril tablets should be administered orally (by mouth). Tablets can be given once daily or split into two daily doses. Your veterinarian will determine the dose and dosing frequency that is best for your pet. Always follow your veterinarian’s instructions.
Provide plenty of fresh water for your pet to drink while he/she is taking this medication. It is advised that dairy products be avoided within two hours of giving this medication.
Most dogs will consume Baytril Taste Tabs willingly when offered by hand. Alternatively, the tablet(s) may be offered in food or directly into your dog’s mouth as with other oral tablet medications. It is recommended to directly pill cats with Baytril Taste Tabs. After administration, watch the animal closely to be certain the entire dose has been consumed. If you have difficulty giving the medication, contact your veterinarian. Use all of the medication that has been prescribed by your veterinarian even if your pet appears well.

What is Carprofen? Carprofen is a non-steroidal anti-inflammatory (NSAID) medication that helps relieve the pain and inflammation that occurs with arthritis in dogs. It also helps bring relief from other joint problems and can help your pet to feel better after surgery. Carprofen is the generic alternative to Rimadyl, Novox, and Vetprofenl. What are the benefits?- Generic form of Rimadyl, Novox, and Vetprofen.
- Can be given once a day or twice a day.
- Effective in controlling joint pain and inflammation.
- Can help bring relief after surgery.
- Scored tablets make it easy to break tablets in half for proper dosing.
Formulated for: Dogs. The safety of Carprofen in puppies under 6 weeks of age has not been established. Some veterinarians may prescribe for small animals and birds although this medication is labeled for dogs only. Do not use with cats. How is this medication given? Carprofen can be given once a day or it can be split into twice daily dosing. Your veterinarian will determine the dosage of medication and the frequency at which it should be given. Give this medication by mouth (orally). Gastrointestinal upset including vomiting and diarrhea may be minimized if Carprofen is given with food. Carprofen should be given at the lowest dose necessary to help your dog to feel better. You should never administer Carprofen to a pet other than the one for which it has been prescribed for. How does it work? Chemicals in the body called prostaglandins are reduced with Carprofen. Since prostaglandins trigger inflammation, minimizing them helps decrease inflammation and pain that occurs as a result of arthritis, surgery, and other joint conditions. What results can I expect? Symptoms of arthritis include stiffness, trouble walking, and difficulty rising. These symptoms can be relieved with Carprofen although this medication will not cure arthritis since there is no known cure for this chronic condition. Your dog should start to feel better although results vary in each individual. If you discontinue Carprofen you may notice your dog’s symptoms returning. What Form(s) does Carprofen come in? scored tablets (caplets). Dose and Administration: Novox is an oral medication that your pet takes by mouth. It can be give one to two times daily but your veterinarian will determine the dose and frequency that is ideal for your dog. Giving Carprofen with food can sometimes help to decrease gastrointestinal upset. If you miss a dose, you should give as soon as you remember. If it is time for the next dose, just skip the dose that you missed so that you do not give two doses at once. Only give Carprofen to the dog for which your veterinarian has prescribed it for. If there are any questions or problems giving your dog this medication, consult your veterinarian immediately. Minimize your dog’s arthritis and joint pain and improve his/her quality of life with Carprofen. Possible Side Effects: The most commonly reported side effect is gastrointestinal upset which may result in vomiting, diarrhea, and lack of appetite. Stomach ulcers may also develop and this can cause your dog to have bloody stools, black stools, or constipation in addition to other gastrointestinal signs. Sometimes the kidneys and liver may be affected. Symptoms of kidney problems include increased thirst, increased urination, and changes in the color and smell of your pet’s urine. If liver problems occur, you may notice jaundice (yellowing of the gums, skin, or eyes). Pale gums, shedding, incoordination, seizures, behavioral changes, and other less common side effects are also possible. If your pet is allergic to this medication, he/she may display symptoms such as facial swelling, hives, scratching, and sudden onset of diarrhea, vomiting, shock, seizures, pale gums, cold limbs, or coma. Contact veterinarian if abnormalities occur.

Formulated for: dogs and cats but is used by veterinarians most commonly to treat hyperthyroidism in cats.
What results can I expect? Methimazole should help to decrease your hyperthyroid cat’s level of thyroid hormone. This should help to reduce your cat’s hyperthyroid symptoms including vomiting and weight loss. This should help your cat to feel better. It can take 1-4 weeks to see a decrease in the level of thyroid hormone produced by the body. Always follow your veterinarian’s precise instructions regarding the use of Methimazole. If you do not understand the directions on the label, ask your veterinarian to explain them to you. The dose may be adjusted based on your pet’s response to treatment and based on thyroid monitoring. Once your pet starts Methimazole, he/she will likely need to remain on the medication for the rest of his/her life in order to control hyperthyroidism. Uses: Methimazole is primarily used to control hyperthyroidism in cats which is a condition that causes the thyroid gland to produce a higher than normal amount of thyroid hormone.
