How is this medication given? Revolution is a topical medication. It is applied to your cat’s skin once a month. It is generally recommended to apply this medication on the same date each month. Some veterinarians recommend applying Revolution every month for all 12 months of the year. If given seasonally, the first dose must be given within 30 days of the pet's first exposure to mosquitoes. The last dose needs to be given within 30 days after the pet's last exposure to mosquitoes. Squeeze the tube 3-4 times to empty all of the liquid on the skin. Do not rub into skin. Do apply Revolution to broken skin. If your cat’s hair coat is wet, do not apply until it is completely dry.
How does this medication work? Revolution works by disturbing the parasite's nerve transmission. Selamectin is the active ingredient that is effective in paralyzing the parasite’s nervous system. This medication targets feline heartworms (Dirofilaria immitis) in their immature stage. It is also effective in killing adult fleas (Ctenocephalides felis) and preventing flea eggs from hatching for one month. Ear mites (Otodectes cynotis), roundworms, and hookworm infections in cats can also be effectively controlled and treated with this product if it is used correctly.
What results can I expect? Revolution should kill feline heartworms in their immature stage. It is effective in providing protection from worms that your cat was exposed to in the preceding month. Ear mites can be eliminated with one treatment but a second treatment a month later may be necessary to solve the problem entirely. Your veterinarian will provide you with instructions on how to use Revolution so always follow his/her recommendations. Fleas are generally killed within 36 hours of application but they may linger especially if the pet was already infested with fleas when Revolution was applied.
What Form(s) does Revolution come in? This medication is a topical liquid that is applied to the skin monthly. Each dose is packed individually. Revolution can be purchased in boxes containing a 3-month, 6-month, or 12-month supply that is suitable for your cat’s weight.
