Product Details

What is Rilexine? This is a medication that is given orally(by mouth). It is an antibiotic that treats pyoderma (bacterial infection of the skin) and urinary tract infections. Tablets make it more convenient to treat your pets infection than with capsules that contain the same active ingredient.

Formulated for: Rilexine can be given to dogs.

How is this medication given? Dosing will vary depending on your pets condition and his/her body weight so follow your veterinarians directions carefully. You can give Rilexine to your pet with or without food. The average frequency of administration is twice daily for 28 days in total. This is just a guideline and can change based on what is best for your pet so always listen to your veterinarian. Always talk to your veterinarian if you have any questions regarding the use of Rilexine.

How does this medication work? Rilexine inhibits nucleopeptide synthesis of the bacterial wall. This results in the eventual death of susceptible bacteria. Rilexine works to kill infections commonly found in the skin (ex. pyoderma, folliculitis, and cellulitis) and urinary tract.

What results can I expect? Once your pet takes Rilexine, his/her symptoms of infection should resolve since this medication works to kill susceptible bacteria. As with any antibiotic, it is imperative that you give your pet all prescribed medication even if he/she starts to feel better before all of the medication has been finished.

What Form(s) does Rilexine come in? Rilexine is available as a chewable, scored tablet with liver flavoring. It comes in 150 mg, 300 mg, and 600 mg strengths in order to accommodate your pets needs.

Generic Name: Cephalexin.

Common Brand Name: Rilexine Chewable Tablets (Virbac).

Dose and Administration: Rilexine is a prescription medication and should be given exactly as directed by your veterinarian. Give this medication with or without food. The general guideline is to use this medication twice a day for 28 days but your veterinarian will determine the correct dose for your pet. Your pets dose is also based on his/her body weight. If you forget to give it a dose, give it as soon as you remember but never give two doses at once.

Uses: This is an antibiotic so it is effective in fighting infection. Rilexine is generally effective in the treatment of superficial pyoderma (skin infection) caused by susceptible strains of Staphylococcus pseudointermedius. It also works to treat urinary tract infections and other susceptible bacterial infections.

Possible Side Effects: Gastrointestinal upset including diarrhea, nausea, and vomiting are the most common side effects with Rilexine. Rilexine can cause an allergic reaction in some pets. Signs of an allergic reaction include swelling, hives, vomiting, and collapse. If your pet experiences an allergic reaction to this medication, contact your veterinarian or emergency veterinary hospital immediately. There are other side effects that can occur. If your pet seems ill after receiving Rilexine, call your veterinarian as soon as possible.

Drug and Food Interactions: Aminoglycosides, amphotericin B, chloramphenicol, and oral anticoagulants(blood thinners) may interact with Rilexine. Other drugs may also interfere with Rilexine so be sure to tell your veterinarian about any other medications, vitamins, or supplements your pet is taking prior to giving Rilexine.

Precautions:Rilexine should not be used in pets who are penicillin, cephalexin, other cephalosporins, or other beta-lactam antibiotics. Rabbits, guinea pigs, hamsters, and gerbils should not take Rilexine. The Rilexine dosage should be reduced in patients with renal impairment since it is excreted primarily through the kidneys. If your pet is pregnant or lactating, be sure to share this information with your veterinarian. If you are sensitive to antimicrobials like penicillin, you should avoid handling Rilexine.
