Last year our 14 year old pointer went on this diet after getting bloodwork back that she was in the beginning stages of kidney failure. Since she has been on this food her bloodwork has come back within normal range. She has done really well on this formula. She is 15 this year and her blood work was good enough to allow her to go under for a much needed dental appointment.

Our 6 year old pointer likes this food as well. I try to feed her her own food, but if she has a choice, she will even opt for this food over her own!

I just wish these veterinary formulas didn't cost so much but the proof is in the bloodwork. She also hasn't had a bladder/kidney infection since she started on this food.

15 year old Maltese with advanced heart failure - needed very low sodium diet due to lasix medication. First low sodium food he hated because it was too hard to chew (he has several teeth missing at his age). Tried the dry NF food as an alternative and he likes the taste just fine but the size of the food is too big for his liking. He can break the kibble down with effort but after a few minutes I think it hurts his teeth and he gives up. I ended up cutting each piece of food in half for him so he would finish his 3/4 cup feeding. After months of this, I thought there has to be a better way so I tried the canned food thinking it would be of similar content. He likes the flavor and I mash up the dry with the canned and add a little water to create a "hash" if you will. He devours it but now I learn the canned ingredients are WAY different and by-product is the largest ingredient after water. I am really sad to learn this - it almost seems they should be sold under different labels and now I'm questioning the health benefit in total when you compare the two versions side by side. The best option would be to make a Dry NF in a small kibble size for small breeds. It feels like at the cost of this food that wouldn't be asking so much. I appreciate the product - at least the dry formula but it's still a struggle for small dog owner to deal with the situation. I don't doubt the dry food has helped him stay surprisingly strong despite his condition and heavy medication, but a little fine tuning of the canned product to use more reputable protein and some form of small bite dry food would probably find a much more appreciative customer and consumer base. After looking like we'd be lucky to get a month out of him he's heading into his 5th month with the condition (coughing as fluid builds up from heart failure) which requires the lasix that are hard on his kidneys so this food helps ease their work load. So I can't complain too much because he's still here and energetic and likes to eat again after being stubborn to eat even half his food with other low sodium foods.

I purchased this dog food for my 2nd Sheltie whose kidneys are failing the food we used last time was the canned version with mixed results I am hoping the bag is better our last dog was 7 when we lost him this guy is 13 so he certainly lived a much longer life before the issue became known .I will comment as we progress.

When my Whippet was diagnosed with Lyme induced Protein Losing Nephritis, I researched homemade diets and commercial. Because I am a Pro Club member I thought I would give the Purina NF a try. He loves it and I am surprised he looks in show condition on it, too, with great shiny coat quality which I did not expect. He is thriving on this and his urine and blood work are as good as could be expected. very happy with NF!

      Thank You, Purina!

Comments about Purina Veterinary Diets Purina Pro Plan Veterinary Diets NF Kidney Function Canine Formula Dry Dog Food:

We recently purchased the Purina NF Kidney Function Dog Food & what a blessing! Our Cinnamon has had kidney issues for a few years now, with her kidney values fluctuating year to year. Recently, her vet told us that her values were slightly high & he wants to put her on a special kidney food diet. We purchased a $50 KD food bag from the vet & Cinnamon wouldn't touch it. Her vet suggested we try the Purina NF Kidney Function food. We were nervous because Cinny is such a picky eater. So, we ordered it & it arrived in the mail today. Whatever ingredient that lures dogs to the kitchen as soon as the bag opens, is clearly enticing! As soon as we opened the bag, Cinnamon jumped from the bed & ran towards the bowl in the kitchen & began eating! We had to give her more, just in case it wasn't enough. We are thrilled that she likes this food & we can't thank Purina enough! Hopefully, she continues eating this food, but so far, so good.
