Why has my veterinarian suggested an elimination diet trial?

Your veterinarian suspects your pet is displaying signs of either an adverse food reaction or a food allergy/hypersensitivity. Although many food ingredients have the potential to induce an allergic response, proteins are the most commonly involved ingredients.

An Elimination Diet Trial will help you and your veterinarian determine if the protein in your pet’s food is inducing an allergic response. Your veterinarian has chosen ROYAL CANIN Veterinary Diet® HYPOALLERGENIC HP®, a hydrolyzed soy protein isolate diet, to conduct an elimination diet trial.

Clinical signs should be re-evaluated by your veterinarian after feeding the elimination diet exclusively for 12-16 weeks.

How will this diet help?

In cats and dogs, both adverse food reactions and food allergy/hypersensitivity can produce the following clinical signs in your pet.

-In Cats: itching, scratching, biting and chewing around the face and neck.
-In Dogs: itching, scratching, biting and chewing around the face, ears, feet, base of tail and peri-anal region.
-In Dogs and Cats: vomiting and/or diarrhea may be present if the immune system targets the gastrointestinal tract.

ROYAL CANIN Veterinary Diet® HYPOALLERGENIC HP® contains patented nutrients to strengthen your pet’s natural skin barrier function, maintain a healthy intestinal tract and reduce inflammation associated with these clinical signs.

Hydrolized Protein Hydrolyzed soy protein, composed of low molecular weight peptides, is highly digestible and has very low antigenic potential Dog and Cat
Skin Barrier Optimal amounts of B vitamins and amino acids help reduce transepidermal water losses and strengthen the barrier effect of the skin
Digestive Support Helps to maintain the balance of gastrointestinal microflora and intestinal mucosa integrity
Natural Preservative Naturally preserved to ensure freshness and quality
My pet is still growing. Is this safe for puppies and kittens?

ROYAL CANIN Veterinary Diet® HYPOALLERGENIC HP® diets meet the AAFCO feeding recommendation for growing puppies and kittens, as well as adult pets. It is safe to use in young dogs and cats where food allergies and adverse food reactions are suspected.

What do I need to do?

Feed ROYAL CANIN Veterinary Diet® HYPOALLERGENIC HP® diet exclusively to your pet. Even minor deviations from a strictly limited antigen diet can lead to a recurrence of clinical symptoms.

  • Avoid snacks, treats, dietary supplements and flavored medications during the food trial as these may contain allergens.
  • Tell your family, friends and neighbors about your pet’s potential allergy and encourage them to respect the strict dietary guidelines.
  • Feed this diet for 12-16 weeks as recommended and return to your veterinarian to evaluate the response.
How do I start a new diet?

Always consult with your veterinarian prior to starting your pet on any nutritional therapy program. We recommend at least a 5-7 day transition when starting a new diet.
