What is an Adverse Food Reaction?

Your veterinarian suspects your pet is displaying signs of either an adverse food reaction or a food allergy/hypersensitivity. By avoiding known allergens in your pet’s food, you may greatly reduce the chance of an allergic reaction and reduce the clinical signs your pet may be experiencing.

An Adverse Food Reaction is any abnormal response to an ingested food. It can present itself in many ways, but some of the most common clinical signs are itchy skin, hair loss and intestinal upset.

A Food Allergy/Hypersensitivity is when the immune system overreacts to a food that is usually harmless. This can only be diagnosed with the help of your veterinarian.

What are the signs to look for?

In cats and dogs, adverse food reactions and food allergy/hypersensitivity typically present with the following clinical signs.

  • In Cats: itching, scratching, biting and chewing, typically around the face and neck.
  • In Dogs: itching, scratching, biting and chewing around the face, ears, feet, base of tail and peri-anal region.
Ear infections and inflammation are common.
