Comments about Tiki Cat Hanalei Luau Wild Salmon in Salmon Consomme Canned Cat Food:

One of my cats loves the salmon in the small can. I have not tried the large can (there is a difference in quality with the Chicken Frick a Zee between the small and large cans, so I'm mentioning the size). My other cat won't have anything to do with it. It's just a preference. The food looks and smells good.

Comments about Tiki Cat Hanalei Luau Wild Salmon in Salmon Consomme Canned Cat Food:

The food is wonderful and my normally picky cat loves it. The choice of sending via Fed EX + USPS is a problem for me. The package was heavy and poorly taped. I choose delivery because carrying heavy packages from the mail kiosk across the street is difficult for me. This method of shipment (which requires me to drive across the street and load the package into my car from the mail kiosk) is not useful. Therefore, I question if I will use this company again.

only one out of four cats will eat it

Comments about Tiki Cat Hanalei Luau Wild Salmon in Salmon Consomme Canned Cat Food:

i've been trying various pet foods that are low in phosphorus, but not prescription level low, to find one that my cats will eat to try to prevent my cats with stage 1-2 CRF from progressing to stage 3-4, and to keep my cats without CRF from getting it.

This is the third taste test after 3 failures. I purchased the Queen Emma Variety Pack because it had the chicken flavors and would allow me to test more than one flavor to hopefully find one my cats like.

The reason I chose to test Tiki Cat was because 4 flavors met all 5 of my requirements: relatively low phosphorous (between 1.1-1.2% DMW), high protein (between 76-83% DMW), very low carbs (less than 5% DMW, and possibly 0%), low fat (between 12-15% DMW), and are low calorie (between 80-87).

The hanalei salmon was only accepted by one cat(the 4th cat is being ruled out of the taste test because he refuses to try anything--but if you have a very picky cat that might be something to consider before buying a large quantity; however, as the taste test went on, he was sneaking bites of the fish flavors when he thought no one was looking). Even if hanalei had been more popular, it's phosphorus level is too high for me, and it is fish, which exposes cats to mercury.

hanalei's numbers: 1.4% phos. DMW, 83% protein DMW, 11% fat DMW; 5% or less carbs DMW; 70 calories.

the consistency is sort of like a chunky pate (not sure how to describe it); the color is brown--it doesn't really look like salmon; there isn't much fluid (which is a little worrying, i noticed my cats drinking more water than i liked--water consumption is hard on their kidneys).

i was luckier with this taste test than some of the others since this is sold at a local store, so I could return the unopened cans, if necessary (it wasn't).

for comparison purposes--my cats used to eat evo turkey/chicken kitten, pate-style wet for years (the one with the purple label). they loved it, but it made them all obese. it gets 64% of its calories from fat, is relatively high calorie (109 for 3 oz), and has a moderately high phosphorus level (1.31). in fact the only good thing was its carb level, at just 4% DMW.

they also like fancy feast classic and purina one chicken or turkey pate. fancy feast is what i used to help them lose weight--and it worked beautifully (all are a healthy weight again, achieved with basically no effort, and in less than 6 months). contrary to popular belief fancy feast does not contain by-products, is relatively low calorie (93 for 3 oz), low fat (only 51% of total calories), is low carb, 4%, and is highly palatable--but it has very high phosphorus levels (2.10).

they also like purina one chicken or turkey pate--the composition is basically the same as fancy feast but it has less phosphorus, but still too high (2.00 for chicken and 1.71 for turkey).

the downside of tiki cat is the price, i estimate it will cost about $200 a month to feed 3-4 cats. for me, this is acceptable, but i realize that it will be a strain on many budgets.

i've also tried felidae pure chicken, triumph chicken and liver, and petguard beef and wheat germ, but none of my cats would touch the felidae, only one cat liked the triumph, and 3 cats refused the petguard after 3 days. you can check my reviews of these other foods if you are interested.

Comments about Tiki Cat Hanalei Luau Wild Salmon in Salmon Consomme Canned Cat Food:

All 5 of my cats love this food however, if you examine the print on the can, this formulation is not AAFCO approved meaning it may be lacking in vitamins/minerals that cats may need every day. Use this as supplementary nutrition and special treats, not everyday nutrition.

Both of my cats like the Tiki Cat Hanalei Luau Wild Salmon. They always finish it. Will continue to include it in their diet. Because of the high-quality of the Tiki brand and both my finicky cats liking many of the flavors, I feed them TikiCat canned food exclusively.
