Description:

Allow your dog to spend hours playing outside without worrying that he/she will become infected with heartworms, fleas, and intestinal worms. Trifexis is a chewable tablet that you can give once a month in order to kill fleas, prevent flea infestations, protect against heartworm disease, and treat/control adult hookworm, roundworm, and whipworm infections.

What is Trifexis? Trifexis is an oral preventative medication that can be given every 30 days to provide protection against fleas, heartworm, disease, and common intestinal parasites. It works to kill fleas, prevent flea infestations, protect against heartworm disease, and treat/control adult hookworm, roundworm, and whipworm infections.

Formulated for: dogs and puppies. Puppies need to be 8 weeks of age or older and must weigh 5 lbs or more in order to receive this medication safely.

How does this medication work? Milbemycin oxime and spinosad are the main ingredients that help to protect your dog from heartworms, fleas, and intestinal parasites. Milbemycin oxime works to help prevent heartworm disease. It works to kill the immature form of the heartworm (Dirofilaria immitis) before heartworms have the chance to develop into adults that can cause active disease. Milbemycin is also effective in killing common adult intestinal parasites (hookworms, roundworms, and whipworms) that can cause problems in your dog. Spinosad helps to kill fleas and prevent future flea infestations by killing adult fleas and immature fleas.

What results can I expect? Trifexis works almost immediately. It starts to kill fleas within 30 minutes and can kill 100% of all biting fleas within 4 hours. It is also effective in killing flea eggs which interrupts the flea life cycle. Trifexis also prevents heartworm disease by killing microfilariae and larvae. This prevents them from developing into adults. You can also expect Trifexis to help treat and control roundworms, hookworms, and whipworms.

What Form(s) does Trifexis come in? This medication is a tablet that is flavored and chewable.

Generic Name: Milbemycin oxime plus spinosad (Common Drug Name)

Common Brand Name: Trifexis (Elanco).

Drug and Food Interactions: Always tell your veterinarian about any medications, vitamins, or supplements your dog is taking before you start giving him/her Trifexis. Some serious adverse reactions have been documented when spinosad and ivermectin at doses higher than the heartworm prevention dose were used simultaneously. No known food interactions have been reported.

Uses: Trifexis is given to dogs one time per month in order to prevent heartworm disease, kill fleas, prevent flea infestations, and treat/control adult hookworm, roundworm, and whipworm infections.

Possible Side Effects: If using Trifexis at the recommended dosage, side effects are rare. Symptoms of gastrointestinal distress and skin irritation can occur. Vomiting, diarrhea, lethargy (decreased activity), lack of appetite, and itching and reddening of the skin are possible. If you observe any of these signs or any unusual symptoms in your dog once Trifexis has been administered, contact your veterinarian immediately. Vomiting may be more likely in puppies under 14 weeks of age. If your dog is truly allergic to Trifexis or to the dying of parasites, he/she may exhibit symptoms such as facial swelling, hives, scratching, sudden onset of diarrhea, vomiting, shock, seizures, pale gums, cold limbs, or coma. If your dog experiences any of these symptoms, call your veterinarian or a local emergency veterinarian immediately.

Benefits:

  • Protects against 5 different types of parasites: fleas, heartworms, roundworms, hookworms, and whipworms.
  • Kills fleas and helps to prevent flea infestations.
  • Combination of 2 active ingredient helps to keep your dog well protected.
  • Tablets are chewable and flavored allowing for easy administration.
  • Orally administered so there is no mess and no stress that other pets can lick medication.

Dose and Administration: Trifexis is a chewable tablet that should be given by mouth (orally) with food in order to achieve the maximal effect. It is given once a month seasonally or year-round. Try to administer each dose on the same day every month.

Follow your veterinarian’s instructions regarding the use of Trifexis. Generally, Once a month administration is what is most common. You may be directed to give this medication every month or just in warm months when mosquitoes and fleas are most prevalent. There are several sizes of this medication available that are based on your dog’s body weight.

If you are giving Trifexis seasonally, it should be administered during and 3 months beyond the mosquito season, preferably on the same date each month. Treatment with less than 3 monthly doses after the last exposure to mosquitoes may not be effective.

This medication should not be given to any dogs other than the one that your veterinarian prescribes it for. Do not split tablets.

If you miss a dose, give it as soon as you remember. If more than one month has passed since the last dose of Trifexis, check with your veterinarian as a repeat heartworm test may be necessary.

Contact your veterinarian regarding Trifexis if you have further questions or if you are not sure how to administer this medication properly.

Storage: This medication should be stored in a tight, light-resistant, childproof container at room temperature. Keep out of reach of children and pets.

A prescription from your veterinarian is required to purchase Trifexis.
