The role of dietary management in canine gastrointestinal conditions is to provide a proper balance of total nutrients while meeting the special dietary needs of the patient. Dietary fats from long chain triglycerides (LCT) can be one of the most complex nutrients to digest, and fermentation of undigested fats can contribute to diarrhea. Medium chain triglycerides (MCT) provide a readily digested and utilized energy source. Feeding a properly formulated diet designed to be highly digestible yet restricted in long chain triglycerides may be beneficial in the management of certain gastrointestinal conditions while meeting the nutritional needs of the animal.

My lab is almost 13 years old. The last year he has started having tummy problems which caused diarrhea often. I tried the usual things, but nothing helped. My vet recommended this food. I wasn't wild about it especially after I read what it the ingredients. But I tried it. First off, my dog loves it. Then, within a few days his diarrhea stopped. I continued to feed him the EN for about a month. Then, I decided to try another food which is supposed to be very good for dogs with tummy issues. The difference is that this food has a list of ingredients that I liked better. Unfortunately, even easing my dog into eating this new food slowly didn't matter. He got diarrhea again. So I went back to the EN. My only worry had been that he could not eat the usual amount that was recommended. He could only eat about 1/2 the recommended amount or else he would get sick again. So I fed him 1/2 the amount and supplemented his diet with pumpkin, apple sauce and no fat yogurt to give him the calories because he had begun losing too much weight. Of course he loved the whole mix. I continued this for another month while slowly increasing the amount of EN I fed to him. Currently he is eating almost the proper amount for a dog his size. His tummy is doing extremely well. He has put on some of the weight he lost. Now his weight is at a healthy level. I had a very hard time finding this food too, thankfully Pet Food Direct carries it. By the way, I noticed a comment that it makes some dogs breath smell bad. I think the food smells but my dog's breath is normal. I am so thankful that I found out about this food. My guy was miserable and you could tell that he really hated the emergency walks they would occur at 2am or 3am and waiting for me to get dressed to go out was difficult. Thanks again!

I bought this because my vet adviced so as my dog came with some problems in her digestive system. We only used it (canned version) for 5-6 days. The inflamation got healed as this food is very easy to digest. However, I changed the food afterwards as I do not like the ingrdients (derivatives). I now feed her with another (expensive) dry food (not specific for digestive issues) that only has salomon and rice. No derivatives. If purina comes with a holistic - free of gluten - food with proper ingredients for carnivores (dogs do not need corn or barley), I will buy it.

Comments about Purina Veterinary Diets EN GastroENteric Canine Formula Dry:

Our vet recommended Purina EN for our lab six years ago after he experienced ongoing digestive problems, including diarrhea. He has been on it ever since. He loves his food, and his digestive problems ceased. This food is not for all family pets. Given the high cost, you'll want to explore other options before making the switch. On balance, however, we're glad we chose this food for our pet.

My 85 lb dog (mix breed) has a very sensitive stomach. Once I switched him to Purina EN, we've had no issues. And bonus, he loves the taste and we had no problem with the switch.

    Two years and no problems!

    By Summer

Comments about Purina Veterinary Diets EN GastroENteric Canine Formula Dry:

I care for a senior who has a Maltese with what I call a 'tender tummy.' She had an expensive vet hospital stay which resulted in the vet recommending the EN diet for her. She's nine years old and has been on EN for two years with no problems! Zapping her food in the micro for a few seconds to take the 'frig chill off helps, especially in cold weather. She had been given 'people food' for treats-- those eyes are so hard to resist!-- but now she's on dry EN as treats and she's happy and healthy! Great Product!
