Molly was itchy as a puppy, and it escalated her first year to feet and leg chewing. We tried various antihistamines but that couldn't control it. We finally resorted to prednisone shots to calm her down after she developed open sores and followed that with a decreasing regimen of prednisone pills in conjunction with antibiotics. She still would have breakout sessions every few months. We finally ran blood work when she was 1 1/2 yrs old and determined what her food and environmental allergy sources were. We then put her on an 8 week food trial and changed her food to the recommended prescription food from another manufacturer (recommended as one of several dog foods by the lab that processed her blood work) . She ate nothing but the Rx food and we used carrots as treats. It did reduce her itching and we eventually phased the prednisone down to 1/2 5mg pill every other day, but could never get her off it completely. She continued to lick her rear area and feet regularly, but at least was free of any open sores. She would occasionally relapse and get some sores once or twice a year, but after another pred regimen, she calmed down, but never completely. We also tried Atopica, Gold Bond powder, Absorbine Jr., topical sprays and shampoos, and almost everything else we heard about. We (the vets and myself) had tried everything short of skin testing and allergy shots. Nothing worked for very long. We had solicited the advice of four different vets over the course of this entire 6 year process. Last December, she had an allergy outbreak and this time she began itching her back significantly, opening sores on her back. We quickly got her an injection to stop the itching, and started her healing process. She healed up in about 6 weeks with the help of meds, but continued to lick and chew her feet regularly. The vet suggested we change her dogfood again, although she didn't really believe it would help, but al least we could try. She called Purina and discussed the situaltion with their technical staff/vets. They said they have a food in their Veterinary Diets that is as pure as anything you can find on today's market for allergy free dog food. I agreed to try it (it's actually $10/bag less expensive than the other allergenic food). Molly did not like the food, because it supposedly has very little taste, but now she's used to it, and devours it as usual. Four weeks after she started the Purina HA Hypoallergenic food, all itching and licking stopped. Almost overnight. No prednisone (which she has been on for almost 6 years, albeit low doses most of the time) no antihistamines, nothing. She is healthy, active, happy, and sassier than ever. What I learned from this is that the expensive blood tests mean little or nothing for food allergies. Food trials are the only thing that tell you if a dog is allergic to food or not. And...allergenic dog food doesn't mean your dog isn't allergic to it. Keep trying different foods until you find the one that works. In Florida, she is exposed to many of those things that her blood work said she is highly allergic to in the environment, but she NEVER ITCHES anymore becuse her problem was the food all along, despte the environment. She sneezes, but she doesn't itch.I hope this experience can help other dog owners find a food that stops the itching like it did for Molly.

HA works great for our dachshund with skin issues. Definitely see a difference when we needed to switch to GI food for an vomiting/diarrhea episode. His itching flared almost immediately. Love the HA.

    Great Detox Diet

    By BillS

Comments about Purina Veterinary Diets Purina Pro Plan Veterinary Diets HA HypoAllergenic Canine Formula Dry Dog Food:

Our German Shepherd had skin allergies which turned his skin black under his belly. We knew he had some food allergy when we switched from Nutro Puppy to Nutro adult in the middle of the winter and he instantly started itching. We switched to Blue Buffalo chicken which cleared up his allergies in 2 weeks. But then he started itching again a year later and we switched him to Blue Buffalo Turkey. A year later the itching started again, so we kept trying all the different limited ingredient foods. It seemed like nothing would work. After years of problems, we tried the Purina HA food. He was not very interested in eating it since it had the consistency and density of white Cocoa Puffs which did not smell like much of anything and did not have the substance to fill his belly. However after feeding for 4 months, his black belly turned back to its natural pink color and he stopped itching! We had to fight with him to keep him away from our other German Shepherd's food "Taste of the Wild" salmon. Since he was sneaking a few pieces anyway, we decided to switch him completely to the "Taste of the Wild" salmon, and surprisingly he is maintaining his pink belly and is not itching. A 4 month detox on Purina HA has done wonders for our dog. I would not want to leave him on it forever since he obviously was not interested in eating it since it can't taste like much of anything if it is the last resort dog food for those allergic to everything. But it definitely did the trick to get our German Shepherd healthy again!
