Chicken by products are not bad. They represent the lungs, gizzard, heart, kidneys, and other parts of the chicken. This is what the cat would normally try to get to before eating other parts of the chicken as they are high in protein. I have been feeding my animals IAMS products for 35 years. My animals loved these products. Just wanted to make sure we were not spreading around ignorance. :)

My cats absolutely LOVE this food. I have to rely on them for letting me know how it tastes, and I have to say they both went completely bonkers for this food! These cats are pretty finicky and have rejected various brands of dry cat food that apparently weren't up to their high standards and "refined" palettes, so I was happy they were enjoying the food so much. The only downside to their complete devotion to the taste of this food is that they continuously beg me for more, and if you have ever had to live with 2 cats meowing constantly, or, if that doesn't work, knocking over your lamps, vases, priceless family heirlooms, etc. to get your attention and try to force you to feed them more, then you know how annoying it can be! If you give in to their pressure, you might negate the weight control that this food is supposed to provide. I'm pretty good at sticking to my guns and usually give them a toy mouse that I keep in a container of catnip to distract them from wanting to gorge themselves. Anyway, according to my two cats, this food is the bees knees (or perhaps the cats pajamas). It gets two big paws up from the cats for being so delicious, according to them. That being said, I'm a veterinary nurse and have my bachelors' in veterinary science. I was so disappointed that the first 3 ingredients in this food were chicken by-product meal, corn meal & corn grits. I don't want to feed any of those to my cats. My cats get MOSTLY a raw and wet food, grain free diet. I supplement them with high quality dry food daily as a sort of treat or snack. They never get more than 2 or 3 TBSP a day. They don't need it, but they love it so much that I can't say no. Plus, it helps keep their teeth clean. In fact, when one of my cats got sick a couple months ago, with "fever of unknown origin", he refused to eat anything other than dry food, and then he would only eat the cheap junk that he had been addicted to when I adopted him. Of course, I ran to the store & bought everything in the way of foods to try & tempt him because I was so desperate to get him to eat. So, I do always keep dry food on hand for emergencies like that, and just as a treat. I was really surprised by the low quality ingredients in this food, especially since my dogs occasionally get the IAMs grain free dog food, which boasts right on the package that it contains no chicken by-product meal. So, I mean, they KNOW it is bad stuff. Why put it in ANY of their foods? When I saw the retail price of this food, I really didn't understand why the ingredients weren't a MUCH better quality. Personally, because of the low quality ingredients, low quality protein source and the food being barraged by corn (seriously, how many cats in the wild are eating corn?), I would only purchase this food in an emergency situation to tempt my cats to eat if they were ill and wouldn't eat anything else. In the meantime, because I'm a pushover with my cats, I will let them finish the bag I have as a treat because they're so crazy about it, but once it's gone, we'll be back to a grain free, whole meat dry food.

I thought it was just me/my cat!

    By The_Carrie

Comments about Iams ProActive Health Adult Indoor Weight & Hairball Care Formula Dry Cat Food:

My cat has recently stopped eating his food. And has been so hungry that he has started to eat our dog's food, which can be quite hazardous. I thought I bought my cat the wrong food until I started reading the reviews on this page! It wasn't me (yay!), but rather the change in the cat food formula/shape/size whathave you. While I'm glad I figured this out, this does not solve my problem. My cat has been eating dog food for over a month because of how much he now hates this cat food (that I've been giving him for 6+ years). This is so disheartening. I will have to find him different food, and somehow get him off of the dog food he's been eating just to nourish his appetite.

    What happened to the food?

    By Staciec

    from California, United States

Comments about Iams ProActive Health Adult Indoor Weight & Hairball Care Formula Dry Cat Food:

I read other reviews that their cats do not like the new version of the food due to the kibble size change per Iams. If that is the case, the smell and taste of the food should still be the same and not have changed. Why wouldn't the cats eat the new food? My cats also threw up from the new food. I also changed to a different bag thinking it may be a bad batch. Now that I read other reviews of the same issue with their cats, I beg you (Iams) to change the food back to its original size since this causes issues with our cats. Please allow our cats to eat again. I am heart-broken to see my cats not eating and starving. The only way to keep them from starving is I give them treats. But, that is not a permanent solution. I can't replace their food with treats. PLEASE CHANGE IT BACK TO ORIGINAL SIZE. IF THAT IS THE ONLY CHANGE TO THE NEW FOOD. Otherwise, I will switch to another brand.
