    Product Details

Oxbow knows how to make your small animal's habitat a real home, especially with products like Oxbow Eco Straw Litter. This dust free litter is a safe bedding choice for your pet, because it is non-toxic and free of odor. Using a special technology that compresses high fiber wheat straw into a pellet, Oxbow Eco Straw Litter is twice as absorbent as newspaper-based litter and absorbs 300 percent of its weight in moisture.
    • Compressed wheat straw
    • Twice the absorbency of newpaper based litter
    • Absorbs 3 percent its weight in moisture
    • High fiber
    • Safe and dust free
    • Non-toxic

Recommended for: Rabbits, Guinea Pigs, Chinchillas, Prairie Dogs and other small animals

    More Information:
    • When wet, Eco-Straw pellets expand and separate, allowing the wet areas to be scooped on a daily basis. This eliminates waste and the litter will last longer than traditional wood shavings.
    • Natural fiber from the wheat grass plant is not only safe if consumed by your pet, but can be beneficial to the digestive system of rabbits, guinea pigs, chinchillas and other plant eating animals.
    • Eco-Straw is your ideal choice for a safe, dust free litter or bedding for your pet. It is toilet flushable and beneficial to the soil when composted. Heat treatment of the pellets guarantees that Eco-Straw will be mite and insect free.
    • Eco-Straw is cleaner and more hygienic for your pet than wood shavings. Due to the unique characteristics of Eco-Straw the urine will migrate below the surface area thereby moving moisture away from your pet.
    • Easier to clean means less time cleaning cages and more time with your pet. Eco-Straw stays in the cage and litter pan and is not easily kicked or thrown out by active pets.
    • Eco-Straw will not track or stick to coats of animals with long hair, thus making the owner and pet more content and happy.

Feeding Directions: Place 1/2-1 inch in the bottom of your pet's cage or litter pan. Scoop and change litter as needed.

I have owned bunnies all my life and spent a great deal of time looking for a litter which is not only non-clumping (clumping = bad for bunnies) but free of chemicals and safe to eat. Bunnies like to chew everything and this includes their litter. Litter made of compressed newspaper contains shreds of metal and plastic which is detrimental to a bunny's digestive system. Please look for yourself by breaking open a few pellets.

I would only recommend this product to rabbit owners who have properly litter trained their bunnies. It would not be a good bedding alternative or for pets who are not litter trained. I change my bunny's litter twice a day by dumping the loose litter from one box into a clean one while the soiled litter clings to the bottom of the soiled litter box in a big clump. To dispose of the used litter I just hold the litter box over the garbage and smack it once. If you keep your cage clean and change the litter often, odor (as with most pets) should not be an issue.

One bag (the smaller one) will last us 3 weeks with our little bunny. Straw litter is also flushable and biodegradable and we go through less litter compared to compressed newspaper litter. Furthermore, litter composed of reclaimed wood pulp will only begin to absorb moisture once it has been soaked for days and corn based litters are toxic to bunnies while anything with clay will result in GI Stasis which will lead to death if not treated promptly.

If you are a bunny owner who has successfully litter trained your bun, are concerned about chemicals and their effects, and aware that your pet will nibble at her litter then this is a great litter choice at an affordable price.

I would not recommend using wheat straw bedding/litter. I used this product once and it coated my hands and arms with a fine, gritty dust and caused them to itch like crazy. And this dust coats everything it comes in contact with. I looked at it closely and although it appears to be a powder, it's actually miniscule pieces of sharp straw. It coated my bunnies fur and made them feel like they had been rolling in dust. It was awful. I am sure it cannot be healthy for any animal.

Comments about Oxbow Eco Straw Litter:

This is a great product! We have 6 chinchillas in 5 cages and this litter goes in the trays below their cages.
      We have tried:
      1. wood shavings (too dusty, not really that absorbent, and little odor control).
      2. Carefresh bedding (far too expensive given how often you need to change it, and not edible. Even thought it's in the tray under their feet they some times could still get a hold of it and chew it).
      3. Vitakraft cage liners (no odor control whatsoever and really would smell after just a few days, some times our chinnies would get a hold of it and really chew it up so that was a health concern and the biggest draw back was expense because with no odor control we were replacing the cage liners every few days.

Eco Litter straw has no odor, nor is there any urine odor when wet, it can absorb a large amount of urine (which means it last so much longer than the other products which translates into less mess and less expense) and it's digestible for our chinnies if they reach down and get a hold of it. I couldn't say enough great things about the Oxbow Eco Litter.

Comments about Oxbow Eco Straw Litter:

I tried about 6 different litters from the most common brands. This was easily the best. My rabbit doesn't kick it out of her cage and it absorbs odors much better than any other litter. It is easy to scoop the most soiled areas from her litter box and replace. LOVE LOVE LOVE!

We have two house rabbits and have to change their litter every other day. We tried other types, but they made the bunnies sneeeze. We can't use traditional cat litter because it is clumping.
