Allow your dog to spend hours playing outside without worrying that he/she will become infected with heartworms, fleas, and intestinal worms. Trifexis is a chewable tablet that you can give once a month in order to kill fleas, prevent flea infestations, protect against heartworm disease, and treat/control adult hookworm, roundworm, and whipworm infections.

What is Trifexis? Trifexis is an oral preventative medication that can be given every 30 days to provide protection against fleas, heartworm, disease, and common intestinal parasites. It works to kill fleas, prevent flea infestations, protect against heartworm disease, and treat/control adult hookworm, roundworm, and whipworm infections.

Formulated for: dogs and puppies. Puppies need to be 8 weeks of age or older and must weigh 5 lbs or more in order to receive this medication safely.

How does this medication work? Milbemycin oxime and spinosad are the main ingredients that help to protect your dog from heartworms, fleas, and intestinal parasites. Milbemycin oxime works to help prevent heartworm disease. It works to kill the immature form of the heartworm (Dirofilaria immitis) before heartworms have the chance to develop into adults that can cause active disease. Milbemycin is also effective in killing common adult intestinal parasites (hookworms, roundworms, and whipworms) that can cause problems in your dog. Spinosad helps to kill fleas and prevent future flea infestations by killing adult fleas and immature fleas.

What results can I expect? Trifexis works almost immediately. It starts to kill fleas within 30 minutes and can kill 100% of all biting fleas within 4 hours. It is also effective in killing flea eggs which interrupts the flea life cycle. Trifexis also prevents heartworm disease by killing microfilariae and larvae. This prevents them from developing into adults. You can also expect Trifexis to help treat and control roundworms, hookworms, and whipworms.

What Form(s) does Trifexis come in? This medication is a tablet that is flavored and chewable.

Generic Name: Milbemycin oxime plus spinosad (Common Drug Name)

Common Brand Name: Trifexis (Elanco).

Drug and Food Interactions: Always tell your veterinarian about any medications, vitamins, or supplements your dog is taking before you start giving him/her Trifexis. Some serious adverse reactions have been documented when spinosad and ivermectin at doses higher than the heartworm prevention dose were used simultaneously. No known food interactions have been reported.

Uses: Trifexis is given to dogs one time per month in order to prevent heartworm disease, kill fleas, prevent flea infestations, and treat/control adult hookworm, roundworm, and whipworm infections.

Possible Side Effects: If using Trifexis at the recommended dosage, side effects are rare. Symptoms of gastrointestinal distress and skin irritation can occur. Vomiting, diarrhea, lethargy (decreased activity), lack of appetite, and itching and reddening of the skin are possible. If you observe any of these signs or any unusual symptoms in your dog once Trifexis has been administered, contact your veterinarian immediately. Vomiting may be more likely in puppies under 14 weeks of age. If your dog is truly allergic to Trifexis or to the dying of parasites, he/she may exhibit symptoms such as facial swelling, hives, scratching, sudden onset of diarrhea, vomiting, shock, seizures, pale gums, cold limbs, or coma. If your dog experiences any of these symptoms, call your veterinarian or a local emergency veterinarian immediately.

My big dog has been on Trifexis for several years and he has never had any side effects from it. It is a bit expensive from my vet and I am going to start ordering it online.
The only negative thing I can say about this medication is, my dog hates the taste and won't chew it. My dog eats dry dog food but every month I have to give him wet dog food with the Trifexis tablet crushed up and mixed in it. This is the only way he will eat it.
It would be nice if this medication would come in a capsule so I could just have my dog swallow it.

We have been giving our 11 month old mix Trifexis at the recommendation of our vet since we have had him (6 months). Two weeks after his latest dose, he was seeming lethargic and we needed a new box of Trifexis, so we decided to take him in for the regular check-up he was slightly overdue for. At the check-up, his fecal came back positive for hookworms; thinking that surely Elanco's satisfaction guarantee would cover treatment, we gave him a prescription of Drontal ($56) at our vet's recommendation. Now, after both myself and my vet have talked to the Elanco rep, we have been told that Elanco will not honor any guarantee since the infection was discovered as part of a regular check-up. I understand that the worm has a short cycle and it is possible that he could test positive that soon after a dose, but based on his possible exposure I find it unlikely (clean yard) and the reaction of Elanco has left me extremely displeased. We will not continue treating with Trifexis, and I certainly would not recommend the product to others.

    Comments about Trifexis:

Upon recommendation of my Vet, I applied this product to my 6 yr old Cocker Spaniel that I have had since birth. I also have his mother and siblings. Within 15 mins of applying he went into horrific seizures. I rushed him to a urgent care vet but it was just too late and he had to be put to sleep. The vet asked what I gave him and when I told her she warned me about this medication killing so many dogs. I called the company a few days later and they took all of the information like lot numbers etc from the box and said they were sorry. Research later showed me this medication kills thousands of dogs a month but not enough to be recalled just yet but enough for lawsuit attorneys to keep watch on it. I am heart broken and wish this on no one. My other dogs had no problems with it but it only takes one time to lose your fur baby forever, Don't risk it.

        Comments about Trifexis:

The product does exactly what it was made to do, take care of fleas and heartworms. It's so nice for the dogs and me. I especially like only having to administer once a month. The dogs are happier not having to contend with those pesky fleas all over their body. Scratching is a thing of the past. They can take their naps in peace. It's great having the heartworm med in the pill. I use to give them a heartworm tablet everyday. It's easy to remember when to give them the Trifexis. I give them their dose on the 1st of every month. I've been using the product for 4 yrs with no problems.

Easy to give once a month - wrap it up in a piece of cheese and my pet doesn't even notice he's swallowing it. :) No side effect and he's protected!
