What happened to the formula?!?

By soundchick

Comments about Royal Canin Veterinary Diets Royal Canin Veterinary Diet Canine Early Cardiac EC 22 Dry Dog Food:

My 15 year old Chihuahua, my heart, has had a heart murmur since 2009 and has been loving this food for 7 years. It was smaller kibbles, darker in color and had a rich fishy smell ("good food"). She loved it and ate her meals with relish. Chihuahuas are notoriously finicky eaters so you can imagine how happy I was to see her eat a dry food. Over the last 3 years or so, I would occasionally get a bag that was different. Larger kibbles, lighter in color and little to no fishy smell ("bad food"). She will not eat this variation of the food. My vet is awesome and they exchanged the bags each time. And each time I got a replacement bag of the "good food". So, all was well......I thought. Jump forward to late 2016. Every bag we get now is the "bad food". I have tried everything I can think of to get my dog to eat it, but she refuses it until she is absolutely starving. Then she'll eat enough to get by. My vet has been in contact with their Royal Canin rep who says there has been no change in the formula for years. I do not have any of the "good food" left to provide a sample so Royal Canin can analyze both the "good food" and "bad food" and determine why there's such a huge difference. During one of the earlier "bad food" bags I showed my vet's office manager the difference between the two bags. She saw and smelled the difference and agreed something was amiss. I now have an elderly dog with a heart condition who is going to have nutritional complications because Royal Canin has changed something in their food that makes it less palatable. Unfortunately, as I had to use all the "good food" to feed my dog I have none left to give to my vet's rep. 20/20 hindsight. I don't know what to do. A once great food that was instrumental in helping my little love live a happy, well-nourished life has changed. Now I am terrified she is going to go downhill because she's not getting the nutrition she needs because her food formula is different. I just can't prove it.

Comments about Royal Canin Veterinary Diets Royal Canin Veterinary Diet Canine Early Cardiac EC 22 Dry Dog Food:

I bought this product under advice from vet. The vet had little experience with the food but thought it would be worth a try for my dog's worsening heart murmur. The dog likes the food.
