Ketoconazole can help when your pet experiences fungal and yeast infections. Some pets with Cushings disease may also be treated with this medication.

What is Ketoconazole? These are oral tablets that are used to treat fungal, yeast, and some dermatophyte (ringworm) infections.

Formulated for: Ketoconazole can be given to dogs, birds, reptiles, ferrets, rabbits, and other small mammals. Is should be used with caution in cats because there is a higher risk of toxicity.

How is this medication given?Your veterinarian will determine the exact dose and frequency of dosing that is right for your pet. Give all prescribed medication by mouth. Always contact your veterinarian if you are not sure how to give this medication correctly.

How does this medication work? Ketoconazole acts on the cell membrane of fungus or yeast halting the growth of susceptible organisms. Ketoconazole is also effective in blocking the production of corticosteroids by the adrenal gland so it may also be given to your pet if he/she suffers from Cushing's disease.

What results can I expect? Results are not immediate. It can take approximately 1-2 weeks to see any obvious improvement in your pets condition but complete resolution of your pets fungal or yeast infection may not occur for a number of weeks. Never stop giving this medication before the entire course is complete unless otherwise directed or symptoms may recur or worsen. If your pet is not improving, contact your veterinarian for further instructions.

What form(s) does Ketoconazole come in? This medication is a tablet that is given orally.

Common Brand Name:Nizoral

Dose and Administration:Give Ketoconazole by mouth. Your veterinarian will calculate the correct dose for your pet and will tell you how often to give it. Always follow his/her prescribed directions. Give a dose as soon as you remember if you miss one but do not double dose. The entire course of medication should always be completed. Do not give this medication to pets other than the one it has been prescribed for.

Uses: Serious fungal infections, some yeast infections, and some ringworm infections can be effectively treated with Ketoconazole. Animals with Cushings disease may also benefit from this medication.

Possible Side Effects: Lack of appetite, vomiting, diarrhea, liver toxicity, and bleeding problems may occur with this medication. Some pets can develop a change in hair coat color but this is reversible.

Some pets may experience a true allergic reaction when Ketoconazole is given. Other side effects may occur.

If your pet appears ill in any way while taking Ketoconazole, call your veterinarian immediately.
Drug and Food Interactions: Discuss all other medication and supplements your pet is taking with your veterinarian prior to giving Ketoconazole. Interactions are possible with antacids, antidepressants, Mitotane, cisapride, digoxin, and anticoagulants. Other drug interactions may occur.

Precautions: Animals who have an allergy to this medication or similar ones should not take it. Pregnant or lactating animals should not be given Ketoconazole. There is a chance of infertility in males. If your pet has liver disease or clotting problems, he/she should not take this medication.

Storage:Keep Ketoconazole at room temperature in a safe place.
