Selegiline helps to improve your pets quality of life when he/she suffers from cognitive dysfunction and senility. Selegiline is the generic form of Anipryl(Pfizer).

What is Selegiline?This is an oral medication used to treat cognitive dysfunction and senility in older dogs. It can also be used to treat Cushings disease when it is caused by a pituitary tumor.

How is this medication given?Selegiline is administered by mouth (orally). This medication is generally given in the morning. Always follow your veterinarians precise instructions regarding the use of Selegiline. Consult your veterinarian if you have any questions regarding the use of this medication.

How does this medication work?Selegiline increases the concentration of dopamine which is a nervous system messenger. When dopamine levels are higher, cognitive processes are improved.

What results can I expect? It may take several weeks to see an improvement when attempting to treat cognitive dysfunction so be patient. 70% of dogs will improve after being treated for one month. The amount, onset, and duration of improvement are different for every animal.

Cushing's disease symptoms usually respond within one to two months of starting Selegiline.

Common Brand Name: Anipryl (Pfizer)

Dose and Administration:Give medication orally only as directed by your veterinarian. Selegiline is usually given in the morning. If you miss a dose, give it as soon as you remember but never double dose. Only give Selegiline to the pet it has been prescribed for. Call your veterinarian if you have any questions about how to use this medication.

Uses:Selegiline is used to treat cognitive dysfunction and senility in older dogs. It can also be used to treat Cushings disease in dogs where symptoms are caused by a pituitary tumor.

Possible Side Effects: Most dogs tolerate Selegiline well when it is given as prescribed. Possible side effects include inappetance, drooling, vomiting, diarrhea, lethargy, restlessness, and shaking. Other side effects may occur.

Some pets may experience an allergic reaction to Selegiline but this is rare.

Call your veterinarian immediately if your pet appears ill in any way after taking Selegiline.

Drug and Food Interactions: Some interactions may occur with other SSRI medications such as amitriptyline and Prozac(fluoxetine). Selegiline may also interact with meperidine, some narcotics, phenylpropanolamine, and amitraz. Other interactions are possible. Always tell your veterinarian about all other medications and supplements your pet is taking prior to starting Selegiline to make sure that it can be given safely.

Precautions:Do not use Selegiline in pets who are allergic to it.

If your pet has Cushings disease, he/she should not take this medication unless your veterinarian has identified a pituitary tumor as the underlying cause.

Selegiline should not be used to treat aggression.

No safety studies have been conducted in pregnant or lactating females.

Storage:Store at room temperature away from children and pets.
