What is Cephalexin? Cephalexin capsules are given by mouth in order treat susceptible bacterial infections of the skin, urinary tract, respiratory tract, bones, joints, and other body systems.

How does this medication work?Cephalexin works by stopping the production of the bacterias cell wall which eventually results in death of the susceptible bacteria.

What results can I expect? Cephalexin is absorbed through the gastrointestinal (GI) tract and is delivered to multiple body systems where bacterial infection is present. Your pet should start to feel better and his/her bacterial infection(s) should resolve if Cephalexin is used as directed. Stopping this medication before the entire course is completed can cause infection to recur or worsen.

Dose and Administration:Always give Cephalexin by mouth as directed by your veterinarian. Give all doses with food if possible.

Always complete the entire course of medication or infection can recur or get worse.

If you do not understand your veterinarians instructions, always contact him/her directly. If you miss a dose, give it as soon as you remember but never give two doses at once. Cephalexin should only be given to the pet it has been prescribed for.

Uses:Cephalexin is an broad-spectrum antibiotic that is used to treat susceptible bacterial infections throughout the body.

Possible Side Effects: Cephalexin is usually well tolerated. Lack of appetite, vomiting, or diarrhea may occur. Some pets may experience drooling, rapid breathing, rashes, excitability, or high fever but this is rare. A true allergic reaction is also possible in some pets. Other side effects are possible.

If your pet appears ill in any way, alert your veterinarian immediately.

Drug and Food Interactions: Always tell your veterinarian about any other medications or supplements your pet is taking before starting Cephalexin. Aminoglycosides (gentamicin, neomycin), amphotericin B, and probenicid may interact with Cephalexin. Other drug interactions may occur.

Precautions:Do not use in animals who are allergic to this class of antibiotics. Also, do not give Cephalexin to animals who are allergic to hypersensitive penicillins as they may react to types of antibiotics.

No fetal abnormalities have been reported from use of Cephalexin but use is not recommended in pregnant or lactating animals since Cephalexin can cross to the fetuses and pass in the milk.

Use with caution in animals with kidney disease.

Storage:Store at room temperature away from children and pets.
